On September 5th, 2026, a beacon of hope emerged for Africa’s most misunderstood and crucial environmental cleanup crew. Six Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries have officially launched the Vulture Safe Zone Alliance and its accompanying guidelines, marking a massive, coordinated step toward protecting vultures across the region.
The statistics surrounding our vulture populations are nothing short of devastating. According to bird conservation organizations, African vulture populations have plummeted by an alarming 80% to 97% over the last five decades.
Today, six of Africa’s 11 vulture species are classified as endangered or critically endangered on the IUCN Red List. These declines are driven by a myriad of human-centric threats: intentional and unintentional poisoning (often linked to belief-based use or the poisoning of megaherbivores), human-wildlife conflict, habitat loss, and fatal encounters with power lines and infrastructure.
SACTrust has produced this A2 classroom poster to highlight the six endangered vulture species. The poster will be printed and distributed as soon as sufficient donor funding is received.
To combat these threats, the newly unveiled Vulture Safe Zone Alliance between Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa, and Tanzania unites these nations in a shared mission.
While cross-border alliances and Vulture Safe Zones are monumental victories for conservation policy and safe infrastructure, establishing a truly safe environment for these birds requires something deeper: a fundamental shift in human behavior.
And changing human behavior starts with children.
This is exactly why SACTrust’s “Vusa the Vulture Guardian” educational comic series is more important today than ever before. If we want to eradicate belief-based poisoning and foster a culture that respects vultures for their vital role in maintaining ecological balance, we have to capture the hearts and minds of the next generation.
Our comic book protagonist, Vusa, doesn’t just teach children facts; he empowers them to become environmental stewards in their own communities, transforming fear and misunderstanding into pride and protection.
SACTrust is already laying the groundwork to support this international alliance from the classroom up. We are incredibly proud to have existing comic distribution partnerships with key players mentioned in the new alliance, including BirdLife and the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT).
Through these relationships—alongside our network of over 30 dedicated NPO partners—Vusa’s message is already taking root across the SADC territories. While our comic distribution network has not yet expanded into Tanzania and Malawi, we are actively looking toward a future where Vusa reaches every corner of the Vulture Safe Zone Alliance map.
To ensure this educational message resonates deeply within the communities that share their skies with these birds, we are also actively translating our comics into local languages. A prime example is our recent collaboration with Wildlife ACT, which has resulted in 3,000 amended copies of the comic being printed in both English and isiZulu for direct distribution throughout schools and communities in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
By pairing top-down conservation policies with bottom-up youth education, we can ensure that the skies of Southern Africa remain safe for these magnificent birds for generations to come.
